- You actually *can* make holographic displays with a computer, but its kinda
- expensive :-) At some US university they did some experiments with that, using
- a very simple hologram scheme (no Z perspective and only 256x256x256
- resolution) and a 65536 CPU "Connection Machine" supercomputer as a display
- processor.

- There are some pretty cheap solutions for clones, the german electronics
- magazibe "ELV" published one of these about a year ago. It consists of an 8bit
- XT card with 2 analog switches and a D/A-converter, along with some TTL logic
- for the XT-bus interface. That's enough to control an X/Y-laserscanner.
- Complete kit with 100Hz scanner (or was it 200Hz? I'm not sure!) costs about
- US$250. I have a 35mW HeNe-laser myself and thought about a parallel-port
- solution for the Amiga based on the PC circuit (the PC version is in fact a
- real ugly hack...). Should be possible for about $40, the scanner is the most
- expensive part of the system though and can not easily be homemade (the ELV
- scanner is at ca. $140). The DOS software can do a couple of neat effects like
- lissajous forms, but can neither be called "fast" nor "flexible". For example,
- it can't synchronize any effects with an external audio source. If I'm going
- to write such a software it should support such things. If anybody wants to
- help with such a project, just email me (better cc:
- Matthias.Bethke@sowi.uni-giessen.de as the email system here doesn't seem to
- work 100% yet).
